Pregnancy is magical… and also a little wild. It’s a true mix of emotions – One minute you’re glowing, the next you’re crying because your partner ate the last of whatever your craving that week.
If you’re a first-time mom, the internet will throw thousands of “must-haves” at you — they are pretty cool to have but here’s the truth… you don’t need all of them.
This list is mom-tested, bump-approved, and full of things you’ll actually use — not just pretty clutter for your baby registry.

1. Maternity Leggings
Because jeans are not your friend after month three. A good pair of maternity leggings will stretch with your growing bump, give you gentle belly support, and make you feel put together even on days you just want to nap. This is a multi-use pregnancy must have as you can wear them to run errands, lounge around the house, or even dress them up with a cute tunic. You may say be tempted to hold onto the stretchy pair you already have in your closet.. trust me you’ll want the maternity leggings that have the extra space for your growing bump. Being comfy and unrestricted is key here.. these are the exact ones that got me through…hit the reviews and you’ll see why..
2. Belly Band
Think of this as a little hug for your bump. Belly bands can help relieve lower back pain, support your belly as it grows and help stabilize your hips. For active moms-to-be, they’re especially great during walks or light workouts. This is especially helpful from the second trimester through to the third!

3. Prenatal Vitamins
This one is an obvious pregnancy must have and your OB will recommend these right away, and for good reason — they’re essential for your baby’s development and your own health. Look for a formula that includes folic acid, iron, DHA, and choline and choose one that won’t make you feel queasy. Consistency is key, so find one you actually like taking.

4. Maternity Pillow
Sleeping with a beach ball in your belly is tricky. A maternity pillow will help you find a comfortable position, support your back, and relieve pressure from your hips and knees. Many moms say it’s a total pregnancy must have and complete game-changer for getting better sleep during pregnancy. To be honest, I didn’t invest in a maternity pillow until much later in my first pregnancy and I totally wish I started earlier. 5. Stretch Mark Cream
Whether or not you get stretch marks is mostly genetics, but keeping your skin hydrated can help it feel soft and less itchy as it stretches. Plus, a nightly belly massage is a nice way to connect with your baby. In fact, I use to have my husband oil my tummy down
6. Comfortable Nursing Bras (Before Baby Arrives!)
By the second or third trimester, your regular bras may start to feel like medieval torture devices. A good nursing bra will give you gentle support without wires and will still be useful after baby arrives. I continued to wear these much longer after babies arrived. These are a a closet staple now!
This nursing bra feels like clouds
7. Large Water Bottle
Pregnancy increases your need for water — and dehydration can make swelling, headaches, and Braxton Hicks contractions worse. Keep a large, reusable water bottle nearby so you can sip throughout the day without constantly refilling. I appreciate having a water bottle that has both straw and spout combo because the speed in which I need water sometimes requires a spout LOL.. for this I would recommend the Owala linked below..
This one keeps water cold for hours
8. Slip-On Shoes
By the third trimester, bending over to tie your shoes can feel like a workout. A comfy pair of slip-on shoes will save your back and make leaving the house a lot easier. Bonus: They’re perfect for the postpartum stage too. My suggestion.. UGGs do it for me every.. single.. time…in winter months but Crocs in the summer is just magical!!
9. Compression Socks
If your ankles and feet start to swell (hi, pregnancy hormones!), compression socks can help improve circulation and reduce discomfort. They’re especially helpful if you’re on your feet a lot or taking a long car ride or flight. I personally didn’t need them BUT I know moms that attest to using them!
10. Lightweight Robe
Perfect for lazy mornings, hospital stays, and middle-of-the-night bathroom trips. A lightweight robe keeps you comfortable without making you overheat and can double as a quick cover-up when visitors drop by unexpectedly. This can double as your go-to hospital robe as well! If you’re looking for most items that can double in your hospital bag you should read my post on the Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist!
11. Belly Oil
This is your ticket to softer skin and a mini spa moment every day. This is an absolute must have…as you grow, your belly will get itchy from all the stretching and you must try not to itch.. not sure if this is a myth or not but they say it’ll make the stretch marks come.. some may say who cares we love warrior stripes but I’m more interested in controlling the itch! Belly oils lock in moisture and can be massaged into your bump, hips, and thighs to help with itchiness. The goal here is to keep moisturized as much as possible to avoid intense itch as your tummy expands! Make it into a spa moment and choose one with a scent you love or go fragrance-free if you’re feeling sensitive.
This belly oil did the trick for me
12. Magnesium Lotion or Epsom Salt
Magnesium lotion can help relax sore muscles and promote better sleep, while Epsom salt baths feel amazing after a long day. Both can help with leg cramps, which are all too common in pregnancy and honestly, you may use it along with postpartum recovery so I’d suggest stocking up!
Final Thoughts from One Mom to Another
Mama, you’re growing a whole human — you deserve comfort. Stock up on the essentials, skip the fluff, and spend the rest of your energy on soaking up the little moments.
These 12 pregnancy must-haves are the ones I found myself using quite a bit, and I’m willing to bet they’ll be your favorites too!
Heres a hack.. many items you need may also be great items to pack for your hospital stay. I have them all listed here under my post on The Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist here!
